A HISTORY OF TISBURY MOTORS
The company has been sited in the heart of Tisbury since
approximately 1916, serving Tisbury and the surrounding
community with all its motoring needs including fuel. Tisbury
Motors is one of the last remaining garages with a attended
service for fuel.
The garage has traded under various names over the years, two
of the longer serving names have been F.W. Carter and son (40’s
and 50’s) it then became Wells Motor Works (owned by David
Well’s in the 60’s early 70’s) then it became known as Tisbury
motors (mid 70’s to the present day).
There exists a long standing connection between Tisbury
Motors and local motor racing in various forms and currently
sponsors a local team involved in hill climbing. (Predominately
Gurstan)
The Current owners Mark and Elaine Carter (no relatives of
F.W.Carter) have a long history within the motor trade, with
Mark having worked within the franchised network and the
independent network, then running his own business in South
West London.
Elaine brings with her Knowledge and experience from the
printing industry having had a previous career in this
field.
In early 1999 Mark and Elaine decided to move out of the rat
race and bring their then young children in a more relaxed
environment, and so came to Tisbury late that year, they have
since then built upon the companies fundamental strengths and
added some modern working practices and technologies to make
Tisbury Motors a “true” one stop shop for all your motoring
needs.
Mark and Elaine are very proud to add their son Matthew to the
workforce (he has just qualified as a technician) making this a
truly family business.
